This is the time of year when we all start to make resolutions or at least think about them. How often are we asked “what are you resolutions this year?” But often times when we think of resolutions, it is because we feel bad about not doing something or guilty of doing too much of something. We then make resolutions at the start of each year to try to “correct” something. This is why more often than not resolutions are easily broken. It’s time to take a different approach.
Rather than think of what resolutions we want to or should make, let’s focus on the GOALS we want to achieve this year in order to feel inspired, empowered, creative or just plain good about ourselves.
STEP ONE: SAY IT LOUD, SAY IT CLEAR
Whether it be goals set around your health, fitness, family, career, I am a firm believer that the first step is to set your goals and state your intentions….out loud. Now this doesn’t mean you have to scream it from the rooftops (but if you want to then go for it!) A great way to make your declaration about your goals is to simply WRITE IT DOWN and place it somewhere that YOU can see or look at from time to time.
STEP TWO: BREAK IT DOWN
I am a firm believer in setting goals and breaking those goals down into achievable steps so that you feel successful along the way. By setting goals within your goals, you create a way to stay motivated to keep moving forward. Think of them like mile markers. These are the different steps along the way which are needed to reach your overall goal.
STEP THREE: GRANT YOURSELF COMPASSION AND FORGIVENESS
None of us are perfect. We may have a bad day here and there, but that is okay. It doesn’t mean that we should give up on ourselves or our goals. One bad day is just that — ONE bad day. It just means we are human. Recognize that, grant yourself compassion and forgiveness, then remind yourself of your goals and what you have achieved so far, no matter how small and celebrate that. Tomorrow is a new day.
TOGETHER WE CAN DO GREAT THINGS
This year I fully embraced the holiday season. Embraced the sadness, the joy, the grief, the happiness and everything in between. Cherished the family traditions and especially the food. From pumpkin rolls to peanut butter knockouts, from raviolis to crab cioppino. I ate my heart out. Food is more than fuel, it’s a way to show love, experience nostalgia and celebrate!
There will always be something to celebrate so that’s why it’s important for us to adopt healthy eating habits that can lead us through both our everyday lives and those special moments.
Think less about what to will lose and more about what you will gain.
Whether you make a declaration in the comments below for what your goals are this new year or you are unsure what to write down, I am here to help you approach your goals in a new way this year.
I will go first…
