I have always said that consistency is key to success, but so is your ability to take action. Those who are able to develop the habit for ACTION are more likely to be successful than people who are unable to take regular ACTION.
When it comes to fitness and one’s health, many of us will procrastinate whether we are discouraged or allow self doubt to enter our minds. Self doubt and even fear often serve as ways to protect us from perceived harm. The human mind is wired to keep ourselves safe when we are in an uncomfortable situation. So subconsciously we look for ways that we can conserve our energy and get the same benefit from exerting less effort. Although it’s not always harm but discomfort that we try to protect ourselves from by taking inaction.
For example take two people with the same desire to run. There is one person who is waiting for the perfect moment to finally start running but never seems to find the time. And then the other person who just simply STARTED running! This person did not overthink anything. They just decide to put on their running shoes and run. What time of day was it? What is the weather like outside? Do I have access to a treadmill? Do I have the right sports bra or shorts, socks or a hat? Do I have the right playlist to motivate me? Do I have more than 20 mins? These are examples of all the questions that may run through our heads that keep us from taking action.
In my example however, both had the same desire to run but one just simply decided to take ACTION. But let’s be realistic. Sometimes it takes more than just DESIRE, but the ability to take regular ACTION. This is because we can all admit that sometimes that desire just isn’t there. However, it is what you actually do in that situation where there is no desire. Do you take action anyway?
Change your MINDSET: it’s ALWAYS the right time to start
You’ll never find the perfect time to do whatever it is that you desire, but it’s ALWAYS the right time to start. Even if it’s just one pushup or sit-up, that’s one pushup or sit-up more than you did yesterday. Take the simple approach to be better than you were yesterday. Simple to say but challenging to be consistent on a daily basis to take action towards that goal. Committing to and taking action towards just one push-up or sit-up often leads to more, longer workouts and increased motivation.
Developing a bias for action takes some planning. But try not to allow having the ideal plan stop you from taking action like the person who never ran. With even a mediocre plan that is a start and once you start taking action you can start making improvements to the plan.
Here are 3 ways to take action on a more regular basis:
Limit distractions
Limit the number of distractions so that you are able to focus on your goal. One reason why people refrain from taking action is due to feeling overwhelmed with all that they having going on around them. Try to turn off some of those distractions. Pinpoint what consumes a lot of your time from media consumption to social media, and place limits. Say no to things that take your time so you can conserve your energy to apply to your goals.
Apply Pressure
If you start overthinking or doubting yourself apply pressure to take action. Pressure can bring out the best in you. Why do you think diamonds are so special? Create that pressure on yourself whether it is you counting down from 10 or imagining yourself going LIVE on television or setting a deadline/timer to get yourself to move into action even if it’s just a workout from your living room.
Break down your goal
Having an overarching goal of wanting to lead a healthy lifestyle is a great vision to have. It will provide direction and motivate/propel you forward. But it will require taking daily action (daily acts) to achieve it. It’s not by taking one step you’ll all of a sudden be healthy. It is in the daily pursuit. So break down your goal into smaller ones. The larger goal will not matter if you are not taking action daily.
No one is going to bring out the best in you EXCEPT YOU! So set those daily goals get started and then when you are ready (or not ready!) set them even higher!
