Each one of us is unique. Why? Because we are who we are as a result of all our experiences and all the people we have met along the way. Yet, often times we forget who we are and we lose sight of our “true self.”
Society often has us feeling that we must live up to others expectations and demands. Many of us struggle in a world which is constantly trying to make us something else or make use feel like we can’t just be ourselves. We are uncertain of how to express ourselves openly because we may fear judgment or ridicule and this only contributes to our confusion in figuring who we are and what we want out of life.
It isn’t easy. I have had my own fair share of self-doubt and fear of judgment by others. Only made worse when the person closest to you tells you that you don’t have it in you. That you are crazy for thinking you are smart enough, bold enough and even talented enough to achieve your dream of helping thousands of people be happier and healthier.
For those of you who have felt the same way or feel that way now, what I can tell you is that while it may seem overwhelming, it doesn’t always have to be. There are actions you can take that will help you take those steps towards finding your true self and feeling comfortable expressing who you are to those around you. Most of all feeling confident enough to chase down your dreams….and catch them!
Are these steps going to be the answers that solve all your problems? Probably not. But will they help you move just one or even a few steps towards being who you are and unleashing the power of your true self? Absolutely!
Drown out all the noise and listen to your inner voice guiding you forward
Be aware of what is going on around you, and then intentionally ignore it so you can be present with yourself and conscious of what you are doing and your own thoughts and state of being. When you find yourself distracted by all the negative thoughts, focus inward. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and think about the things you believe in, what makes you feel comfortable, what makes you happy, what you are passionate about. Take a moment to do this at least once a day and especially when you start feeling uncentered. When you become more self aware, you will find there are moments where you will just naturally express yourself in a way that is more inline with who you really are.
Set boundaries and just say “NO”; make yourself a PRIORITY
Studies have shown that when you have low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence you also have more difficulty saying no which can result in stress, burnout and even depression. If you don’t want to do something, or feel uncomfortable, or don’t have the time, just say “NO”! Don’t let others convince you otherwise. People who are confident understand that it is okay to say no, it’s healthy. More importantly when they say no, they say it with confidence. Saying no allows you to honor your existing commitments to yourself and gives you the ability to successfully fulfill them.
Believe in YOU
It’s not too complicated. It is the simple act of believing in YOU and your authentic self. I am a firm believer that we each have the power to do whatever we want to do and be whomever we want to be. We just need to simply believe in who we are truly and authentically.
Dress for Success
You have the power to change how you feel every day and that includes the power to choose what you wear. When you are feeling confident in your clothes, you tend to be more bold, more daring…more CONFIDENT!
So don’t be afraid to be daring in your choice of clothing if you want to be. Choose things that will shake things up on your morning commute or your session in the gym. Dressing for your true self will not only boost your confidence but most likely those of everyone around you!
